In a recent statement, military officials from the autonomous administration in northeastern Syria, commonly referred to as Rojava, have called on the United States and France to step up efforts to secure the region's borders. The request comes amidst escalating attacks by Turkish forces in the region, threatening stability and the fragile peace process.
"The United States and France can really protect the security of the entire border. We are ready for this military coalition to continue that responsibility," said a spokesperson for Rojava’s military forces. The official urged France to send troops to the border, emphasizing that their presence could help enforce a separation zone and mitigate tensions with Turkey. "By convincing Turkey to accept being on the border, we can start the peace process. We hope everything will be agreed upon in the next few weeks," the official added.
The call for international assistance follows sustained military offensives by Turkey targeting Kurdish-controlled areas in northeastern Syria. Turkey considers the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a key U.S. ally in the fight against ISIS, as an extension of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which Ankara designates as a terrorist organization.
In October 2019, Turkish forces launched "Operation Peace Spring," an incursion aimed at establishing a "safe zone" along the Syrian-Turkish border. The operation displaced tens of thousands of civilians, disrupted the region’s fragile governance, and sparked international condemnation. Despite temporary ceasefires brokered by the U.S. and Russia, Turkish attacks have continued sporadically, raising concerns about a full-scale escalation.
Rojava's autonomous administration has repeatedly sought international support to deter Turkish aggression and ensure the safety of its multi-ethnic population, including Kurds, Arabs, and Christians. The deployment of international troops, particularly from NATO allies like France, is seen as a critical step to stabilize the region and resume negotiations for a long-term peace agreement.
As talks progress, the involvement of U.S. and French forces could play a pivotal role in maintaining a balance of power, protecting civilians, and fostering a conducive environment for diplomatic solutions.
The coming weeks are expected to be crucial in determining whether a sustainable peace process can be initiated or if the region will face further destabilization.
