Germany's warning to its citizens about the risk of hostage-taking by the Islamic Republic
The German Foreign Ministry has warned its citizens that traveling to Iran puts them at risk of being taken hostage following the execution of Jamshid Sharmahd. A spokesperson for the German Foreign Ministry stated at a press conference: "We have long advised citizens not to travel to Iran, and those who are in Iran should leave the country." He added that the execution of Jamshid Sharmahd, an Iranian-German citizen, demonstrates that Tehran takes German nationals hostage. In response to this execution, Germany has closed three consulates of the Islamic Republic in the country.
