Yalda Abbasi, a well-known Kurdish artist from North Khorasan and a resident of Germany, was detained by Iranian security forces upon her return to Iran and transferred to prison to serve a previously issued sentence.
According to informed sources, Abbasi was arrested without prior notice when she visited a police station to address passport-related matters. Following her detention, she was taken directly to Vakilabad Prison in Mashhad, where she has begun serving her sentence.
Human rights organizations report that the Evin Prosecutor’s Office had earlier opened a legal case against Abbasi, sentencing her in absentia to one year in prison on charges of “propaganda against the regime.” The sentence is reportedly linked to her public support for the “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement and the recent protests across Kurdistan and Iran. Sources indicate that Abbasi was unaware of the ruling until the moment of her arrest.
Originally from Shirvan in North Khorasan Province, Yalda Abbasi is considered one of the most prominent voices of Khorasani Kurdish music. She began her artistic career at the age of 11 and has lived abroad for several years. In addition to receiving multiple international artistic awards in Europe, Abbasi is also known for her cultural and social activism.
